    • Lars and Martha were married in the spring of 1854; that summer they
sailed for the United States of America. Lars had lived on a small
farm. He had been instructed in the Lutheran faith, but his schooling
was limited. He could read and figure well, but as a child he could
not write. Martha's schooling was also limited; but she had become
skilled as a seamstress, tailoring men's clothing.

In the summer of 1854, they arrived in Lisbon, Illinois. That fall
they made arrangements to purchase a tract of land in central Iowa. On
May 17, 1855, in company with 104 persons of the Lisbon community,
they started across the prairie with their belongings. There were 21
families, a widow and five young men. Personal belongings were packed
      into covered wagons drawn by 18 span of oxen and six teams of horses;
and a single horse was hitched to a spring wagon. A herd of cattle
completed the group. They reached their destination on June 7, 1855,
spending the first night in the open, about one-half mile north of
where the Palestine Lutheran Church now stands. The following Sunday
morning they formed a circle with their wagons to give thanks for a
successful journey over a strange trail of some 300 miles.

The first building in the colony was a temporary church; an open
hayshed. The eighty acres which our grandparents had purchased from
the government for $1.25 an acre is located about two miles southwest
      of Cambridge, Iowa; South
