- Olav Vormestrand was the lensmann in Vikedal from 1656 until 1662. In
1657, he collected 16 riksdalar for his official services (plus being
exempt from tax). He also operated an illegal sawmill, as did many
other substantial farmers of the time. According to a court case of
1671, some logs that Olav purchased from his tenant farmers were
seized by merchants from Stavanger who claimed that Olav had no right
to engage in the lumber business. Olav had been singled out by the
Stavanger merchants because he owned the largest sawmill in Ryfylke.
Although Olav appears to have lost this case, the governor ruled that
the Ryfylke farmers had the right to cut and sell unfinished logs,
while the Stavanger merchants retained the exclusive privilege of
dealing in processed lumber (boards, rafters, beams, etc). Olav bought
land at Vormestrand in 1633 and 1640. By 1670, he owned almost all of
