- George de Dunbar, 9th Earl of Dunbar/March; referred to in contemporary sources by 1370-90 as Lord of Annandale and the Isle of Man; Warden of the Marches 1372, took command of the Scots at Otterburn 1388, after the death of "Black Douglas"; renounced his allegiance to Robert III 1400 on that King's eldest son and heir the Duke of Rothesay breaking off his engagement to the 9th Earl's daughter Elizabeth, sided with the English and fought for Henry IV at Battles of Homildon Hill (defeat of Scots by "Harry Hotspur" Percy) 1402 and Shrewsbury (against Harry Hotspur, now in rebellion) 1403; after Robert III's death 1406 the 9th Earl negotiated with the Regent a renewal of allegiance to the Scottish Crown; though at the price of the Lordship of Annandale among others possessions. GEORGE (DUNBAR), EARL OF MARCH, or DUNBAR [SCT], great-nephew and heir male, being son and heir of Sir Patrick DUNBAR, by Isabel, youngest daughter of Thomas (RANDOLPH), EARL OF MORAY [SCT] abovenamed, which Patrick (who was at the battle of Poitiers 19 September 1356, but who died that year in Crete) was son and heir of Sir Alexander Dunbar, brother of the late Earl of March, or Dunbar. He was born about 1336; in the reign of Robert II (1370-90) he is styled Lord of Annandale and Man. A Warden of the Marches, 1372; was at the Parliament, at Scone, 1373, when the succession to the throne [SCT] was settled; accompanied Douglas in his raid into England, after whose death at Otterburn, in 1388, the command of the Scots devolved on him. His daughter, Elizabeth, having been betrothed to the Duke of Rothesay [SCT], the heir apparent to the Crown [SCT], and that prince, disregarding such contract (having married Marjorie Douglas in February 1399/1400), the Earl renounced his allegiance, 25 July 1400, and joined the English, whose King (Henry IV) granted him the forfeited estates of the Lord Bardolf, he having assisted at the battles of Homildon Hill, 14 September 1402, and of Shrewsbury, 23 July 1403. After the death of Robert III in 1406, he treated with the Regent Albany [SCT] for restoration to Scotland. This, however, was not effected without his resigning, to the all powerful Earl of Douglas, the Lordship of Annandale, the Castle of Lochmaben, &c., by charter 2 October 1409. In 1411 he was one of the Commissioners for a truce with England.
He married Christian, daughter. of Alan DE SETON (formerly WINTOUN), by Margaret, daughter and heir of Sir Alexander SETON, of Seton. She was living 7 March 1401/2. He died about 1416 or 1420, and certainly before 31 Mar. 1423, aged about 80. [Complete Peerage IV:508-9, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]
