| Notes |
came from New Liberty, Ky. in 1825 to New Bethel, Ind. He cleared a plot of ground, put in a crop and with the aid of his son, Harrison, built a log cabin. He then went back to Ky. to get his family. They had been in Ind. a short time when Reuben and his son needed to go to a mill north of their home. As they travelled through the woods, they cut trees so they could find their way back home. Reuben was very warm, and it started raining. He went quite a distance in his wet clothes, caught a cold and died within 6 months. His was the first internment at the cemetary in New Bethel, Ind. which was build on his land.
In the graveyard at New Bethel the first internment was that of Reuben Adams, on whose land the buriel-place was laid out. It was at first a plat of about one acre, which has since been increased to about two acres. The ground is now nearly filled with graves, and contains some handsome monuments, | (History of Indianapolis and Marion County) |
Reuben was a physician in Ky. as well as a farmer. He bought the NE 1/4 of Sec 31 in Franklin Township, Marion Co. on Oct 28, 1824.
Mary Adams struggled relentlessly to make a living for her children. In 1834, she asked John Messinger to plot out the town of New Bethel. The town plot was recorded Mar 24, 1834. The Adams' gave a plot of ground on their farm for the building of the New Bethel Baptist Church. It was build on the south side of Michigan Rd. (now Northeastern) where the old cemetary now resides.
Reuben and Mary were cousins. One source shows Rueben's father as Abraham Adams, other sources show his father as Luke Adams.
